Obituary of Merton Samuel Nightingale

Merton Samuel Nightingale, Sam to his friends, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 5th, 2023. He was born in Hammondsville, Jefferson county Ohio on September 7, 1933, the fourth of five children and the only son of Oscar and Dorothy Marybell Nightingale.

Sam retired to Council after 23 years of active duty service to his country in the USAF. Not able to just sit idle, He was always busy; his hobbies included bee keeping for several years, farming, and rebuilding antique John Deere Tractors. He opened Sam’s TV an Electric and, for almost 40 years, was the “go to” guy for appliances, televisions and Satellite TV. After retiring from the appliance business, Sam and his grandsons and son -  in -  law went on several fishing trips to Montana, Washington state and northern Idaho.

Sam is preceded in death by his Parents, Oscar and Marybell Nightingale, his sisters Margaret Jenkins, Florence Boone, Norma Nightingale, his wife Lela Nightingale and son Gary Nightingale.

Sam is survived by his Sister Edith Lindesmith, his daughter Linda (Bob) Gratton, six grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren, of whom he was exceedingly proud of. We all looked forward to the family cook outs and Holiday celebrations at Grandpa Sam’s house where there was never a dull moment and always room at the table, everyone was welcome.

His sudden departure was an unexpected shock, as Sam was healthy and led a very active life. He never met anyone that he didn’t like and always lived life as if each day were his last with positivity, honesty and great pride for his country. He is truly missed.

Sam will be laid to rest, with military honors, at 1 p m on May 26, 2023, at the Hornet Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Legion, P O Box 484, Council, ID 83612 or to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, P O Box 348, Council, ID 83612.
