Born on April 7, 1946 at their family home in Cabool, Missouri to loving parents Harlen and Laura Armstrong. The family moved to Idaho when he was nine years old. At a very young age, in the early hours of the morning and before school,  he would milk cows at a small dairy in Fruitland, Idaho. He retired as a Mine Project Superintendent at the age of 65.

On April 29, 1966 he married the love of his life, Cynthia Sue Thompson. They were married fifty-five wonderful years and raised three children: Nancy, Tammie and Brenda.
